Color code conversion

Convert a color code between HEX, RGB, and HSL

CSS, design tools, and APIs each prefer different color formats. The color converter turns any HEX, RGB, or HSL value into all three formats in one step, with a live swatch, entirely in your browser.

01

Convert a color in one paste

The same workflow works for brand colors, design tokens, and quick CSS checks.

1

Paste the color code

Use any supported format: hex, rgb, or hsl.

2

Run the conversion

The format is detected automatically and all three outputs are generated.

3

Check the swatch

The live swatch confirms the converted values are the color you expect.

4

Copy the format you need

Grab HEX for CSS, RGB for design tools, or HSL for palette work.

02

Why the same color has three names

HEX is a compact hex encoding of red, green, and blue bytes. RGB spells those channels as decimal numbers. HSL describes the same color by hue, saturation, and lightness, which is easier for humans to reason about.

Because all three describe the same RGB triplet, conversion is exact and reversible, and this converter returns all of them at once.

03

Common color format problems

  • Hand-converting hex to RGB and making arithmetic mistakes
  • Copying the wrong format into CSS and seeing the wrong color
  • Losing alpha values when switching between formats
04

Best practices

  • Keep design tokens in one canonical format and convert for output
  • Verify converted colors against the swatch, not just the numbers
  • Use 8-digit hex when you need transparency in CSS

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert an 8-digit hex color?

Yes. Hex colors with alpha, such as #3b82f680, convert to the matching RGBA and HSLA values.

What is the difference between HSL and HSB?

HSL uses lightness where pure colors sit at 50 percent; HSB uses brightness where they sit at 100 percent. This converter uses HSL, the CSS standard.

Is HEX to RGB conversion exact?

Yes. HEX is literally the hex representation of the RGB bytes, so the conversion is lossless.

Is my color uploaded?

No. Everything runs locally in your browser.

06

Your color stays local

Conversion math runs in your browser. The color value you paste is never uploaded or stored.
